do you think 23 too old?

Hello there,

Im 23 now and want to take business undergraduate classes.

im Asian and never went to university in US before. If i take undergraduate class in US.,will my classmates think me too old? Will they get well with me?

Or as Amerian, do you feel strange if you have class with a 23 old person if you are 18? will you laugh at the one?

Absolutely not. I graduated high school at 18, tried college, and was not mentally mature. I stayed out of school and went back at the age of 24 and finished last year at 26 ( I did 4 semesters and 3 summers, an average of 16 hours each) and was an RA looking after 18 and 19 year olds. My classmates and residents actually respected me a LOT more due to age and work experience. I also was so much more focused and blew the classes out the water. Now I work for Microsoft. I think it is actually better to wait a few years.

It depends on where you go and how the people are around there.

I have been to school where Americans are totally open to different cultures and really friendly. On the other hand, for my last 2 years, where I was the only Asian in all my classes, all the Americans and other people avoid me. (I don’t have a mean personality or stuff like that). They are just really closed and only want to hang out with their friends.

I wouldn’t feel strange to have someone older in my classroom. Actually, I am in a similiar situation as you, except, I will be 17/18 and still have to attend 10th grade since I had to drop out 2x due to personal problems. I would feel weird to be the oldest, but, as long as the classmates are friendly and easy to get along (I am moving to a new school), I wouldn’t care about age.

My best friend (who is an American), his classroom has an Asian who is 20+ when he was 16. He didn’t mind it at all, instead, he was quite interesting in that person because that person was friendly and nice : )

So, all I can say is good luck ^-^ since it is college, the people should be matured, and wouldn’t laugh at you. If they laugh at you, tell me, and I will laugh at them for being stupid! 😀

I don’t think that the other students will laugh at you. I’m not even sure that it will be obvious that you are several years older. It might depend on how you look, talk, dress, and behave. At a community college you are more likely to find less mature and sophisticated students, but at any four year college or university, I think it would be extremely unlikely that anyone would think it odd that you were older, and even less likely that they would be so rude as to laugh at you. People do attend college at different ages. If you were to attend one of the urban colleges (such as Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan) you would find many adult students who are attending college while also working and raising a family. You will also be more likely to find older students attending evening classes.

You are never too old for college. I’m 24, and still working on my undergrad degree. A lot of people change majors halfway through, so it takes them longer, not to mention the sheer number of older people going back to school (I’ve had many classmates in their forties and fifties and even a couple in their seventies!). You will not have any problems due to your age.

no it is not too old-in the US people of all ages go to college-I am 25 and will be starting my first year next year (I will be 26 then)

You are never too old. Even 33, 43, 53, etc. would not be too old. Asians look young for their age anyway, just tell them you’re 18 and they’ll believe you! Go for it! 🙂

you really shouldn’t care what others think of you. you sound like you really want to make this move and go to university, so do it! plus, many people go to college after 18, so im sure you’ll find people close to your age… good luck and follow your heart…

a great grandmother in australia just earned her masters degree. one can never be too old for an education. i took undergrad classes with a 40 year old single mom. i never saw a harder worker in my life. we were all so proud of her.
