Lack of tools. lack of rain.lack of grain to plant.lack of a good way to get harvest to market without it spoiling. There should be enough issues here to fill at least one page maybe even more if you expplain each.

(farmers vs cattlemen) this may have ended by 1870 also consider the industrial revolution and what impact it had on farming, when kids left the farm to go to factory jobs in cities. this might also be considered but check the time frames to make sure they coincide.
