manual is written, using little or no computers to produce the answer… in today’s time manual is obsolete.. but at the beginning of the computer age many folks did not trust computers with reasons like “power outage” system shut down, lost/compromised records (the list goes on and on) so there was always a hand written (or typed) version… today manual also means a copy of the records are kept at another location , and also a copy is printed (saved) every so often within a 34 hour period.

manual could also refer to the storage devices.. like punchcards
