First world countries, the most industrially advanced, were primarily users of slaves, or customers to the slave trade. They wanted laborers for the great quantities of resources they appropriated by conquest or colonialization, and when the call for labor produced slave markets, they showed little hesitation to buy people. Most of the early colonial powers were slave purchasers. One by one they abandoned the practice.

The other half of the sin, of course, was the subjugation of people by the slave sellers.
