to me that means, that someone who doesnt just throw their life away believes that there’s something in store for them in the future.

It means the person who says it wants to sound profound by saying something meaningless or nonsensical.

That’s my first guess.

If forced to find sense in it, I’d say that “to eat” (that is, an action) is to believe, for instance, that food exists. In the same way that walking presupposes a solid surface.

I imagine it being said in response to an extreme skeptic who’s raised doubt about the existence of the physical world outside our minds.

Much like Samuel Johnson’s famous kicking of a brick, “I refute him thus.” in response to Berkeley (the guy, not the city).

It could be based on the Eucharist. If you willingly consume the symbolic body of Christ, you believe in the resurrection and all things Catholic. Or (less religious) if you nibble my spaghetti, you like and trust me (Lady and the Tramp)
