The first syllable in all those words is stressed. Stressed means more emphasis is put on it in pronouncing it or in other words, it’s said a little louder. I can’t answer why, though. Whoever decided on the pronunciation back in the day thought that’s the way it should be, I guess. You can tell which syllable of a word is stressed by looking it up in the dictionary. The stressed syllable will have a more boldfaced apostrophe after it.
