Fred begins to walk toward John’s house at 3mi/h.John leves his house at the same time and walks toward Fred’s house on the same path at a rate of 2 mi/h. How long will it be before they meet if the distance between the houses is 4 miles?

They walk towards each other at a combined speed of 5 m.p.h. so the question is asking you how long it would take to walk 4 miles at 5 m.p.h.
using time taken = distance travelled/average speed, we get:
time taken = 4/5 hours
= 4/5 x 60 minutes,
= 48 minutes.
