Some good books would be, Civil Disobedience and Other Essays by Henry David Thoreau, Narrative Of Sojourner Truth. Even reading some Shakespeare like Midsummer Nights would be good. Good luck:)

Hi i learnt Hindi , Tamil when i was young but my vocab was not exellent so what i did was i used to watch news more frequently .. its the only time where people try to speak completely pure native language with no addups or mixings as modernised .. I improved this was and by making friends online and in real who can speak these languages i meant whose native language was hindi and tamil .. i used to ask these people about the words i come through in news and i dont get … So .. u too try gtting friend around whose native language is what language u wanna learn and improve vocab and keep watching news and drama serials ( these serials gets more realistic .. real life communication)… Best of Luck

The Little Brown Handbook

(most college comp classes use it)

Evergreen

(had this one in high school)

Scrabble Dictionary

(i know this is an odd one to recommend, but

i suggest taking up playing scrabble or similar games for learning better spelling and possibly more words)

[plus it’s a game so it’s not like homework]

Besides that i’d suggest looking at local bookstores for a book that fits what exactly you need or want to learn. :]

Strunk & White’s The Elements of Style for writing.

In general, reading a lot of good books will boost your vocabulary and comprehension skills.

Read books that are just a little above your complete comfort level.
