1. ) quarters = q

dimes = d

d+q = 76

0.1d+0.25y = 13

Okay, now use substitution to solve this one. First isolate one variable (I’ll pick “d”) and then substitute that into the other equation.

d+q = 76

d = 76 – q

0.1d + 0.25q = 13

0.1(76-q) + 0.25q = 13

7.6 – 0.1q + 0.25q = 13

7.6 + 0.15q = 13

0.15q = 5.4

q = 36

Now solve for the other variable:

d + 36 = 76

d = 40

There are 63 dimes and 13 quarters.

2.) kg = x

Find where Prov. Express (4 + 1.50x) is less than the package (5 + 1x). Solve as if the less than sign were and equal sign (pretend the less than sign isn’t there).

4 + 1.50x < 5 + 1x. 0.5x < 1 x < 2 Prov. Express is cheaper if the package is less than 2kg. 3.) Amount 1 = x Amount 2 = y x + y = 8000 (we know the two amounts total $8000) 0.1x + 0.12y = 900 (we know that the interest of the two rates equals 900. To find only the interest, multiply the principle amount - the amount in the account - by the interest rate in decimal form.) x + y = 8000 0.1x + 0.12y = 900 Solve with substitution again... x = 8000 - y 0.1(8000 - y) + 0.12y = 900 800 - 0.1y + 0.12y = 900 800 + 0.02y = 900 0.02y = 100 y = 5000 x + 5000 = 8000 x = 3000 $5000 at 10% and $3000 at 12%. 4.) w = wage rate t = tips earned both weeks Here we know that the 12(w) plus the number of tips is $117. We also know that 10(w) plus the number of tips is 100. 12w + x = 117 10w + x = 100 Solve by subtracting the two equations. You literally just subtract each term in the second equation from the corresponding term in the first equation. 12w + x = 117 10w + x = 100 -------------------- 2w + 0x = 17 2w = 17 w = 8.5 ($8.5/hr) You don't need to solve for x because the problem doesn't ask you to find the amount made in tips. The hourly wage is $8.5/hr. 5.) kg of peanuts = p kg of raisins = r 2.25r + 1.75p = 41 r + p = 20 Use substitution again. r + p = 20 r = 20 - p 2.25(20 - p) + p = 41 45 - 2.25p + p = 41 45 - 1.25p = 41 4 = 1.25p p = 3.2 r + 3.2 = 20 r = 16.8 3.2kg/peanuts and 16.8kg/raisins

This is too much to ask in one question.

Here’s the first one though.

d are dimes, q are quarters

You know 2 different equasions from what you are given.

First,

1300 = 10d + 25q

1300 cents = 10 cents * the number of dimes + 25 cents * the number of quarters

Second

q + d = 76

There are 76 coins.

Solve for one in terms of the other.

q = 76 – d

Now substitute into the first equasion.

1300 = 10d + 25q

1300 = 10d + 25(76 – d)

1300 = 10d + 1900 – 25d

-600 = -15d

15d = 600

d = 40

There are 40 dimes

and…

q + d = 76

q + 40 = 76

q = 36

36 quarters.

1. x+y=76 and then I divided 1300 by 25 and got 52 so the number of quarters has to be under 52. Then I divided 76 by 2 and got 38. So then I multiplied 38 by 25 and 38 by 10 and added them together and it was close…13.30 so then I took 37×25 and 39×10 and I got13.05. Then I 36×25 and 40×10 and got 13.00. there really wasn’t any equation that helped me figure this out. I just kept guessing numbers until it worked. Does your book give you any examples? With my homework if I can see an example usually I can figure out any problem. Good luck figuring the rest of them out. =)
