math home work help? please?

hi,

I need help solving this problem because i have no idea how to even begin to solve it.

Okay, here is the question:

1.Since the beginning of 1990, the number of squirrels in a certain wooded area has tripled during every 3 year period of time. If there were 5,400 squirrels in that wooded area at the beggining of 1999, how many squirrels were in that wooded area at the beginning of 1990?

Thanks so much!

# of squirrels = x

Every three years, “x” triples.

1999-1990=9 years, therefore “x” triples 3 times during this period

3 times 3x = 5,400

****x=600****

Proof:

3(3×600)=5400

3(1800)=5400

5400=5400
