One reason is that many older buildings were built in the days before air conditioning, so higher ceilings helped them stay cooler in summer – harder to heat in winter though.

Old libraries have high ceilings so that the books stay dry. Some of the oldest libraries only had books on the top floor even though they were built with two floors. The bottom floor was left open (without window panes or doors). This was so that there would be good air circulation and therefore so that the books would remain dry. Hope that that answers your question 😉

One of the reason that older libraries have high ceilings, besides heat, books, etc, was the idea of making the Library a great building, Cathedral like, since it’s such an important place for learning (remember there wasn’t an Internet).

The idea of grand, soaring structures, as seen in Churches, Palaces and Government building is to reflect their power and importance to society.
