Chronos 2

I,m doing some hmwk. There’s a question I don’t understand.?

It says “What do you think are the common characteristics and themes of this novel?” What does that mean? By themes, could I put something like “action”?And what about characteristics? Should I put “scary” or some adjective like that?

Those answers would be OK, but not great. They’d probably get you a C or a D. I think the question is asking you to think a little more deeply about the novel. A “theme” is an idea that can be stated in the form of a sentence, that represents the central meaning or message of the novel. For instance, in the novel “To Kill a Mockingbird,” one theme might be “Judging people by their appearance, without getting to know them first, can lead to suffering;” or, stated more simply, a theme might be “Racism is wrong.” “Action” by itself is not a theme.

Characteristics of the novel are the things about it that make it different from other novels. For instance, if the novel is in the form of letters or diary entries, that’s one characteristic you could mention. If it takes place in flashbacks, that’s another. If it features long descriptive passages, that’s another characteristic. Just like characteristics of people might be things like their hair color, eye color, etc., characteristics of novels are the things about them that you can use to describe what they’re like. “Scary” isn’t really a characteristic; it’s more a description of your reaction to the novel. But you could maybe say that the novel is characterized by intense imagery or suspenseful descriptions that lead to fear.

Hopefully my answer is helpful. My advice would be, don’t try so hard to just find something to fill in for the answers. Instead, close your eyes and take some time to really THINK about this novel. What do you think it meant? How did it make you feel? What do you think makes it special and good (or special and bad)? Once you have these thoughts in mind, then sit down and write them out. Within those thoughts will be the answers to the questions.

Good luck!!

A theme is the message or messages in the novel that the writer is trying to get across to the reader. In other words, what lesson or lessons could you learn from the book. I’m not sure what you mean by characteristics, but I’m guessing it means what typical things you would find in a novel of that type. It might even help to know what novel you are talking about.

it means that what kind of traits do each of the character(s) have in common. when it says the theme of the novel it means what’s the broad idea of the story, a lesson, a message that gets a point across. the message can be discribed my life, society, or human natures

~ i hope that this helped you in some kind of way.~
