in the us congress the number of representatives is 65 less than five times the number of senators. there are a total of 535 members of congress. find the number of senators and the number of representatives.

HR = 5xS – 65
HR + S = 535
5xS-65 + S = 535
6S -65 = 535
6S = 600
S = 100
HR = 435

x be the no. of senators
5x-65 be the no. of representatives
The equation would be like this:
x+5x-65=535
6x=535+65
6x=600
x=100
Then there are a total of 100 senators and 435 representatives…To double check, just substitute the values in the equation..Hope this helps..
