How do you determine the signs in Factoring with the foil method?

this is the problem

x^2 + 5x + 4 = 0

can someone explain how to determine the signs and when exactly to use th foil method?

Look at the last term. If it is negative you know that one sign will be positive and one will be negative in the factors. If it is positive, then you have to look at the center term. If it is positive then you know that both the signs in the factors will be positive, and if it is negative you know that both signs will be negative in the factors.

Examples:

ax^2 + bx +c = 0 : (ax+c)(ax+c)=0

ax^2 – bx + c = 0 : (ax-c)(ax-c)=0

ax^2 + bx – c = 0 : (ax-c)(ax+c)=0
