If it is non-fiction, research. Go to the library and start by getting about 4 to 5 books already written on the subject. Read over them. Then look at their bibliography, and find a about 2 books from there for each book you think sounds interesting, read over them. Now formulate a thesis. Once you have a thesis, see what if any books have been done on your topic. If not that’s great if so, look over them and read them. Then start going to the stacks. Look at old newspaper accounts, magazines from the time period. One may want to try and find actual governmental records on the topic. Talk to the people in the special collections in a local university and see if they have any primary source material. Compile it, organize it. Then pull it all together. Yeah I know there’s a lot to it, but if it was easy, everyone would do it.

Write every day, even if you don’t want to. Force yourself!

Set a regular time to write.

Even if you don’t write on your book one night, still write. It’ll help you in the long run.
