geometry HELP!?

For questions 1-3, use the following information:

On a number line, the coordinates of A, B, C, and D are -5, -2, 0, and 3 respectively. Find the length of each segment. Are they congruent?

1. AB and CD

2. AC and BD

3. BD and AD

Favorite Answer

1. AB and CD – congruent with length of each segment at 3 units.

2. AC and BD – congruent with length of each segment at 5 units

3. BD and AD – not congruent: BD length is 5 units; AD length is 8 units.

Draw a picture… so you can see everything visually…

-5 ……… -2 ……. 0 …………3

o ——— o —— o ———-o

A ……….. B ……. C ……….. D

1. AB and CD

AB = -2 – (-5) = -2 + 5 = 3 …. so AB = 3

CD = 3 – 0 = 3 …. so AB = 3

AB = 3 and CD = 3

Since AB = CD, they are congruent.

2. AC and BD

AC = 0 – (-5) = 0 + 5 = 5 …. so AC = 5

BD = 3 – (-2) = 3 + 2 = 5 …. so BD = 5

AC = 5 and BD = 5

Since AC = BD, they are congruent.

3. BD and AD

BD = 3 – (-2) = 3 + 2 = 5 …. so BD = 5

AD = 3 – (-5) = 3 + 5 = 8 …. so AD = 8

BD = 5 and AD = 8

Since AC does NOT equal BD, so they are NOT congruent.

HOPE THIS HELPS!!! Do you understand now? Line segments are said to be “congruent” if the are the same length.

In the first question, each line segment had a length of 3. So the line segments ARE congruent.

In the 2nd question, each line segment had a length of 5. So, again, the line segments ARE congruent.

In the 3rd and last question, one line segment had a length of 5, and the other line segment had a length of 8. So that is why the line segments are NOT congruent.
