HOMEWORK HELP! Please?

Why is the idea of scale important when making maps?

I have to address the issues of both size and proportion in my answer.

Think if you had a map of a city… only it was a perfectly accurate map that was literally the size of the city. How useful would that be? Once you’ve milled that over you’ll realize that you don’t want to go with a true scale map, so you’ll need to scale things down. Increasing the scale might increase the accuracy of a map, but can easily decrease its utility.

As far as the proportion thing, it’d help if you were clearer on what was actually being asked of you. If things on a map aren’t proportional to their sizes in real life the map is just a bunch of useless symbols of varying sizes. If you are talking about proportion to the user than it more goes with what I said up above.

Anyway, I hoped that helped somewhat. Good luck!

I used to teach mountain & glacier climbing for the Canadian Armed Forces. We relied on maps for a great many things. Our lives quite literally depended on our maps being correct especially in scale and proportion. Also contour, lines of magnetic declination and topographical symbols.

umm, without scaling the map could allow false pretenses about an objects size.

For example, on most united states maps, alaska is scaled WAY down, so many people think that it’s about half the size of texas. In reality, if laid on top of the continental us, it would stretch from the atlantic to the pacific.
