Jean Valjean had to start over completely after getting out of prison. You could make a go with that.

It really depends on the Characters your using. For example if your using characters such as Fontin, Epony, and even Jean Val Jean you could say that these people were stealing and were into prositiution in a self less act to survive and for their Family to surive. And then there is the police officer (Jeanvar???) Who basically spent his whole life chasing after a man he thought was a criminal and in his defense, Jean val Jean was, so the police officer felt like he was just doing his job but he took it to the extreme. So if you are writting it based on that I would open with something along the lines of

“Would you sacrifice your life to protect and save the ones you love” and your thesis would be “The characters in this story sacrified their lives doing what they felt was nessary, but maybe not always right, in order to to bring justice, to feed their loved ones and to save lives.”

But if you are going in the other direction you could use, “Was Jean Val Jean once an “innocent” criminal who spent his life being chased after all because he stole a loft of bread to feed his family. When given a second chance, he stole from a man who tried to help him. This causes us someome confusion. But he took a third chance at life when he promied Fontin he would care for Collette, when he swore to turn himself in after she was grown and when he sacrified his own life in order to save his “daughters” love. ”

ok i hope that kinda helps you out.

You could use the good/bad idea nd use both Valjean and Javere. Both had good intentions about what they were doing, and one did bad for good, (stealing the bread, etc) and the other did good for bad (trying to catch the criminal for personal reasons instead of catching him because he was a criminal.)
