Probably the easiest way to do this is to transfer everything into 6ths to start with.

You already have -5/6 (negative 5 6ths) – hence we’ve chose 6ths to work in!.

You now need to convert your plus 5 into 6ths. To find out how many 6ths plus 5 is, muliply by 6: 5 * 6 = 30, so you have 30 6ths (you can check this: 30 / 6 =5, which is what you started with).

Same for your minus 6 : minus 6 is minus (6*6) 6ths, so minus 36 6ths.

You equation is therefore

-5/6 +30/6 – 36/6

minus 5 6ths plus 30 6ths minus 36 6ths

Because everything is now in 6ths, you cal just add them together:

-5 + 30 – 36 6 ths

= 25 – 36 6 ths

= -11 6ths

So your answer is -11/6.
