Help with function?
f(x+h) – f(x)
————— <------fraction (all over) h for f(x) = x²-x+4 This is what I got step by step, and my answer was not correct (according to the back of my algebra book). I've taken out the denominator of h for now, just to make it easier to read 1. [(x+h)² - (x+h) + 4] - [x²-x+4] 2. x²+xh+h² -x+h+4 - x²-x-4 3. xh+h²-2x+h 4. -2x+h(x+h+1) Here I just grouped and factored out an h 5. -2x+(x+h+1) I've canceled out the h from the denominator 6. -2x+x+h+1 7. -x+h+1 My final answer The book's final answer is 2x+h-1 Where did I mess up?
Favorite Answer
1-2 You didn’t expand (x+h)^2 properly
1-2 You didn’t distribute the minus sign properly
4-5 You didn’t cancel the h properly; you’d need -2x/h in this case.
You need to be Veeerrry careful with those individual operations. You’re doing the right general work; it’s only your algebraic simplification that needs more attention.
