grammar question?

i have a question about the grammar with the word its.

I know you make it a contration when you’re trying to say “it is”. but if you are talking about something that is an it being in posession of something, do you make it a contraction too?

like i have to write a story for english class and its about a dragon, and i havent put a gender on it so its an it. if i said it made people its slave, do i put its slave or it’s slave?

xD

its slave

The way I check is this: make “its” into “it is”. Does the sentence still sound ok? If it sounds ok then put it’s; if it doesn’t sound ok then put “its”. I find this easier than thinking of possession and stuff like that.

He was its slave.

“its” shows possession. It’s (it is) the word you want to use 🙂

it’s = it is

‘made people slaves’ = no its required

You say “its slave”. “It’s” is only when you mean “it is”.

all you have to do is break it apart into ‘it is’ and ask yourself ‘does this make sense?’ if it doesn’t it is ‘its’ if it does it will be ‘it’s’

In this case, you’d use its. You use “it’s” when you mean “it is”.

it’s = it is

its = posession

Think of he’s and his when you need to figure out it’s or its.
