Granger is a kind of vagrant / gypsy-ish (no offense) person who leads the “Book People.” He is found by Montag and he provides Montag with the solution that helps him escape those cyber-dogs. He brings Montag to safety and helps him to realize his destiny. It should also be noted that he is a former author.
Granger is symbolic of the constant search for answers and intellectuals. He is symbolic of the oppressed intellectual as well, like Galileo under house arrest.

Granger is an intellectual and author. He is the leader of the group of hoboes that Montag meets on the tracks.Along with Clarisse and Faber, Granger is sympathetic to Montag. He helps Montag by encouraging him as he works to comprehend what he has read. Granger believes that as long as a person has contributed to the world, his or her life is important, something he learned from his Grandfather. After the city is destroyed, Granger leads the rebuilding of an improved, literate society.
