You can’t extend this metaphor, since it is already mixed. The first bit describes a cougar, which is a sort of wild animal. Wild animals do not leap across hurdles on the cinder track. You should therefore develop an extended mixed metaphor, such as: “Ramona was a cougar, leaping across the hurdles on [the] cinder track at the speed of an express train, a shell leaving the muzzle of a bazooka at take-off.”
