it’s complicated. You reach your own limitations emotionally/sometimes physically which better helps you understand others. You gain wisdom and experience from difficult situations. And you get through it, inspiring a new clarity and sense of accomplishment. You feel if you can climb that mountain you can climb any mountain.

There is an old saying: Gold and brass look the same.You can tell the difference only when you put them in fire.
If the going is smooth, your attributes like strength of character, resolve, fearlessness, etc., will not have any opportunity to show themselves. But once a crisis rises, these may come to the fore.
Also, in a crisis you may buckle or you may rise to the occasion.To quote myself : ” History chooses the hour and the hour produces the hero.”

Your response to a crisis is coping with stress that will either develop your character and your ability to solve problems under emergancy condtiions, or or it will show that you aren’t ready to cope with that level of adversity.
Winning doesn’t teach you much, but losing in the “school of hard knocks” teachs you alot about yourself, and what to do differently in the future.
