let f(x)= (2x^2 + x + a)/ (x^2 -2x -3).

Can the number a be chosen so that lim –>3 f(x) exists?

Since the bottom factors to be (x-3)(x+1), you need to get the top to also have a factor of (x-3) so you can cancel it and the bottom won’t be zero when you plug in 3 for x.

So the top is (2x + b)(x – 3), and bx – 6x must come out x, so b is 7. Then you’d cancel leaving (2x+7)/(x+1) and plug in 3.
