Limiting factor – the factor which limits the growth of a population because there is too little or too much of it in the environment.

Density Dependent Limiting Factors:

usually works on large, crowded populations

does not work in small, scattered populations

Density Independent Limiting Factors:

Limiting factors that have the same effect on small populations as large ones.

Examples: Mostly abiotic factors like temperature, sunlight, precipitation,

Density dependent limiting factors – food, cover, space, contagious, genetic (in-breeding) and nutritional diseases, predation

The population density actually influences these limiting factors.

Density independent limiting factors – weather, natural disasters, human perturbations, accidents, non-contagious diseases
