another physics question? please?

A student touring Japan accidentally drops a 500 yen coin from a height of 1.20 m above the floor of the Bullet Train, which is traveling at 250 km/hr. (a) How long does it take for the coin to hit the floor? (b) Where does the coin land with respect to the floor of the train? (c) How far along the track does the train go during the time it takes for the coin to fall?

dear God why is it so hard. when i drew the triangle with a leg of 1.2 m and the leg 250 km… i’m not sure whether to turn the units into meters or kilo meters.. what do u think?

a)

Y:

D=V1T+1/2AT^2

1.2=1/2(-9.8)T^2

T=.495 s

This is because the train is moving horizontally while the coin is moving vertically and therefore they have nothing to do with each other.

b)

I’m not sure about this one. I think that the coin lands at the same x-position that you released it from.

c)

250 km/hr = .278 m/s

X:

D=V1T+1/2AT^2

D=(.278)(.495)

D=.138 m
