1. 3/4x -5 = 4.

We need to get x by itself. thus, the first thing we need to do is get constants (numbers) on one side and variables on the other. Thus, we now have 3/4x = 9. Now, divide the x by 3/4 because division is the opposite of multiplying and thus you need to cancel it out. Or, you can multiply the 3/4 by it’s recipricol 4/3. What you do to one side you must do to the other. Let’s do that. Now we have

x = 9 x 4/3. Thus, x= 36/3. Reduced this equals x = 12.

Let’s check: 3/4 (12) – 5 = 4.

9 – 5 = 4. They check out.

2. 5/7x +4 = 14

Same principles apply

5/7x = 10

x = 14

Check:

5/7 (14) + 4 = 14

10 +4 = 14 They check out.

Your two answers are 1.x= 12 2. x = 14.

Remember, when writing out the answer REMEMBEr that you must have x = so your teacher knows which variable you are solving for.
