What kind a card can i use to load money on for my son in college?

My son doesnt have a bank account. I wanted to know if there is some kind of card that you can buy where anyone(me, his father, or grandparents) can add money to it.

it would be best to open an account for him to get a Debit Card where anyone can deposit money into his account….

more like a basic checking account, where there is no charge if you (parents/grandparents) have the same banking where you going to open the account…

that way, if you needed to transfer money from your account to his account, it would take like five minutes and will be in that account the minute you submit it without having to wait 24 hours for money to transferr….

A bank account that has a debit card would work. Or you can buy a prepaid VISA card he could use, the fee is small and you and anyone else that wants to support his college costs can buy them lots of places. He can also check his balance online. Would be a good way to restrict his purchases, if for example you wanted to keep his spending down to a few hundred bucks a month, he’d have to learn to live within the card balance.

Ask the bank if there is something they can set up for school. Like a trust fund with a debit card. Have the lowest limit possible set on the card so your son can’t go on a crazy spending spree. Tell him to use the card for school ONLY and that you can trust himto make smarter decisions. Have him call you whenever he needs to use the card if he isn’t sure. Have copies of statements sent to your address so you can track his spending.

Many universities have a I.D. that has many functions. For example Dalhousie University has the ‘DalCard’ which is used as I.D., library card, and a pre-paid credit card. It has a function where parents can put money on the card through the internet.

What university is your son going to? It is likely they have a similar set-up.

There are also pre-paid mastercards you can get which should be very easy to find with a “prepaid mastercard” search in Yahoo or Google.

Yes there are cards of that types. you can do some online search to find them. You can also go for some student credit cards.

There are many scholarships given out by government and other organisations every year. You can try for some online government scholarships or grants. Fill up online forms and see if you are selected for the scholarship.

most universities and colleges offer their own card, usually named after the school’s sports team and it can have money loaded onto it anytime, and used on campus for anything, i live in a northern new york college town and the businesses here even except it……….
