I was offered a check by Academic Loan Group to consolidate my loans???

I was mailed a check from Academic Loan Group to consolidate my loans with them. And it can only be cashed if I do indeed consolidate with them.

I don’t know anything about this company. Has anyone else heard of this company or been given similar offers?

I don’t want to get caught up in a scam. Please help!

Any check you get in the mail without applying for it is a scam. Tear it up and throw it away.

You will get TONS of junk mail like this the older you get… all of them are tied to hidden fees you have to read the fine print to decipher….usually agreeing to pay a fee per month or extraordinary interest. If you want to consolidate your loans, talk to your lender or your schools fin aid office, don’t go through someone who is soliciting you by mailing you money.

i agree with her. once you graduate, the independent companies will bug you to no end about consolidating with them. be wary of any company that offers you a “check” in exchange for your loan. they may offer crappy interest rates or non-fixed rates in order to buy your loan from the original lender.

if you have a Federal Loan, you can contact them to consolidate it (that’s what i did). or if you want to shop around, contact reputable loan companies like Sallie Mae or other ones in your area that maybe friends or family used. consolidating is great because you have a locked in interest rate and only have to pay one bill instead of 3 or 4. legally the federal loan agencies cant recommend consolidation businesses if your interested in shopping around. hope this helps!

They are hoping that you will transfer you loan to them. I wouldn’t go with any company that sent me a free check to consolidate. If you want to consolidate, do you research and see what’s out there. The company you currently have your loan with likely does consolidation. Check with them and see what they offer.

ditto what everyone else said. i work at nelnet and consolidate student loans for a living. i have NEVER hear of that company.

definately shop around. some of the more nkown companies: dept of education, ACS, nelnet, sallie mae (dont go with them as their customer service is in india), citibank, suntrust, bank of america.

i would pick nelnet, citibank, or the Dept. of Ed. in terms of customer service.

the rate will be the same, but you are shopping around for incentives.

i wont sell you on nelnet, but we are open 24/7.

good luck either way.
