Can I get a job and not have money deducted from social security benefits?

I am 16 and want to get a job to help my mom and step-dad. My father is a paraplegic and receives disability and social security. I receive a check every month for a set amount of money. I have been told that if I get a job on the books whatever money I make will be deducted. I really need some conslolation on this problem.

You would need to work “under the table” or “off the books”. That means you get paid cash or check and your employer doesn’t report your earnings to the State or Federal Government. Technically, this is illegal because you won’t be paying any taxes, even if you file a tax return, you have no proof of income without your employer giving you W-2 forms (proof of your earnings). Finally, the earnings you make “off the books” don’t have social security or disability deductions. So if you continue to work off the books and get injured, you won’t be able to collect state disability for your injury because you didnt pay into it. Eventually when you are ready to collect social security, your amount will be lower because you haven’t paid into it.

While you are still young and hopefully don’t need to worry about disability or social security, it is really admirable that you want to help out. If you want to get some extra money and want to do something “off the books” that is under the radar, what about private tutoring or babysitting? Most times, parents just pay you in cash. good luck!
