Preparations for Inclement Weather
Ahead of the expected effects of Hurricane Florence, the City of Cary is encouraging citizens to take necessary time today to finalize preparations for inclement weather to come, including potential flooding and even possible high tides. You may already know that part of the Coastal Barrier Resource Areas (CPRA) has been designated a Flood Zone. In essence, the Zone is a six foot deep sea level rise which can be caused by a large amount of rainfall. It is a part of the City of Cary’s master plan implementation plan, and residents have been urged to make all necessary preparations for flooding and to stay away from low-lying areas which can be susceptible to flash flooding and tidal waves. In other parts of the state, similar advisories have been issued, and the City of Cary has also declared a Flood Emergency.
Potential Flooding
Precautions and drills are in force to deal with any potential flooding, and residents have been warned to check on their homes and gardens every day as the storm approaches. The best time to start preparing for a hurricane is in September, but there is still some work to be done before the storm arrives, and the last thing you want to do is find out later that you didn’t prepare properly for hurricane irma. If you live in the Intracoastal Waterway, a hurricane warning has been issued for the entire State. If you happen to be in Wilmington, NC and are concerned about potential flooding, you should check with your insurance provider or go online to find out whether or not your home is covered. In many cases, your flood insurance policy will cover such damage.
During The Storm
Another reason for making preparations for inclement weather is that it can put a great deal of pressure on your home. You may find yourself needing to evacuate your home if a storm comes through, and your roof may have to lift during the storm. If you are not prepared to lose power and water, you may find yourself in a position where you have to get the power shut off in order to use the lights and appliances in your home. There is a lot to think about when it comes to preparing for hurricane season, but the important thing is to start doing so as soon as possible. There will be a lot of rain, and a lot of mess to clean up. Don’t let the worry over things getting ruined ruin your life!
Preparations for a Hurricane
The third day of this month usually falls on a Tuesday. Preparing for hurricanes may sound silly, but think about it. That’s two full days off of work, and you get to spend those days relaxing and enjoying the weather. This gives you ample time to get all of your paperwork together and get started on your preparations for a hurricane. If you’re anything like me, when that week ends there is always a slight feeling of dread that another big storm is going to come through.
I’m not referring to any type of fear, but rather a realistic concern that we may take for granted. Think about this, if the weather is very cloudy with light winds you are probably not going to be able to even see the outline of tree limbs or other objects in the distance. This would leave you completely isolated from any type of communications networks and could leave you cut off from any type of emergency authorities that could help you. If you don’t have an effective way to ensure the safety of your family then you are going to face severe consequences, especially if your home is still intact.
Follow The Basic Plans for Hurricane Preparation
This is why it is extremely important to make sure you have the proper preparations for inclement weather in your home. You can never be too prepared for these types of things, and it is often best to follow the basic plans for hurricane preparation, such as having a solid waste services and emergency numbers in every room of your home. This ensures that if your home is flooded you will have numbers to call, as well as a solid waste service ready to remove your garbage, as soon as possible.
- Another preparation for inclement weather that you should consider is making sure all of your electrical outlets are safe from damage.
- Do not underestimate the amount of power that surges from storms.
- It can cause many problems in your home when you least expect it.
- If you have extension cords in some rooms, like your basement, they should be buried under concrete or block so that they do not get cut off during a windstorm.
- It’s not only unsafe, but it can also be bad for your electrical system, so it is best to follow these preparations to make sure all of your outlets are safe.
Storms
A storm will cause floods and tornadoes sometimes, so it is extremely important to make sure that your home and all of your belongings are protected. If you do not prepare in advance, you will find yourself in a lot of trouble when the storm comes, and you might find yourself in between houses damaged and unable to move. Preparations for inclement weather should include following the weather channel’s warning signs, having flashlights and candles in your home, making sure your electrical outlets are safe, and calling the local law firms if you see any sign of water damage. These preparations will make the storm go away faster and make your life easier.
