How Can You Keep Music Education In Vogue?

In keeping with the growing need to keep music education in our schools, we’ve recently heard some concerns expressed. Some feel that music education is being co-opted by those that make music; they feel that the focus is more on teaching how to play an instrument rather than encouraging creativity and learning. Other worry that as time goes on, music instruction will turn into teaching about history and culture, rather than teaching the skills necessary for a fulfilling musical career. Still others are worried that music instruction will become redundant in our high-paced society. Is all of this just a bluff, or is there really something to fear?

It’s true that many music instruction classes don’t offer more than the basics. Taking a basic music class doesn’t give you much of a leg up on your fellow students. Parents may have been pushed to sign their children up for music classes at public schools, but they also may have realized that there are some private schools that are able to provide the same quality of instruction. Private schools may be a bit more expensive, but they typically have a smaller student body and more personalized attention.

There is no way to make up for a lack of curriculum when it comes to learning music as an instrument. It’s important to make sure that each student is given a curriculum that is specifically tailored to his specific needs. This may require some additional time and effort, but in the end, the benefits are well worth it. We all know that a well-rounded education is important.

After all, there are probably hundreds of songs that your child sings during his daily life, right? It wouldn’t make sense for them to take any music education class if they’re singing along with their classmates during gym class, right? Well, maybe not, but private schools can provide some instruction in music theory or instruction on specific musical styles. There are some schools that do still offer this type of class.

Another concern about keeping music education in public schools comes from those who believe that children learn best through the direct experience of a teacher. Sure, there are books and other materials that parents can use to teach their children. However, these resources can’t replace the direct experience that teachers can share with a student. A teacher can explain a piece of music, give examples of how different approaches to a song can change the meaning, or discuss the history of specific pieces.

For others, the issue is the cost of private instruction. Although public schools can provide some instruction, it can be costly. Some people don’t even have the budget to pay for private music instruction. When you consider that in the United States, one out of five high school students has chosen to skip a grade because they weren’t interested enough in the subject matter, it becomes clear that having your child take classes that focus on the arts is a necessity.

He or she can use instructional video or software, he or she can participate in online courses, or he or she can sit in front of a teacher and perform. No matter what option you choose, if you are concerned about the status of your son or daughter’s education, then you should do all you can to make sure that he or she gets a head start with their instruction.
