The thesis statement is to understand the purpose of education and the bad concept people have about education as Pepellashi explains in his work what education is. There are several arguments the author has used to show the bad concept people have about education. For example people have different views on why one should study. Most people believe that education is made to help one maintain or be successful in his job. This is because they think education includes reading, writing and one dong things correctly. The bad notion people have shows the reasoning people have towards education thus appeal to logic. The author has also analyzed the structure and design of the current secondary and university institutions. The structure of these institutions is said to revolve around helping people build skills that are related to the career one wants. Another idea is the Jefferson’s visualization of how the current institutions should operate.

Jefferson has suggested a curriculum that is aimed at developing a critical mind so that it can balance the interests of the privileged and the unprivileged in the society. He believes self assessment and sincere consideration for all people is the important factor of this critical thinking. Pepellashi has also shown the origin of public secondary shools.This schools are as a result of need for trained workers during the industrial revolution era. This revolution made the Jefferson idea to be ignored. The impact of authority is also evidenced in his work. Authority tells us that the reason why people get education is to make them successful. People need to follow authority less by incorporating Jefferson’s idea into the current curriculum but instead they respect authority and only read to get jobs. Following authority is harmful because it is makes us focus on getting jobs than discovering our self.

For example it doesn’t allow people to define themselves as human beings. That is how one relates with people and the impact he has on other people. Thus the other talks about valuing people and respecting their needs this shows the appeal to peoples need and value. Pepellashi argues that people need to learn about their inner operating system before they get to know things like jobs. Thus the author emphasizes on personal discovery. In conclusion people should try hard and understand that education is not all about job but one needs to rediscover himself thus enhancing ones character. The author has shown different appeals in his work. The appeal to logic, appeal to value, appeal to needs and appeal to character (Patridge, 2009).
