We write letters because we need them in life.

If you work in an office, you will need to write memos to co-workers and superiors.

As a citizen you might want to write a letter of complaint to a public official (or private) and maybe a letter to the a newspaper editor.

It will exercise your brain and improve your English

it stemmed from Cuneiform

there had to be a way of communicating clearly long distance, as well as preserving history, giving clear instructions, oral traditions are and were great, but are open to interpretation. If you think of how much our written language becomes open to interpretation, think of how complicated it would get if it was all oral!

Cuneiform was a simple but intricate series of slashes made into wet clay with a unique tool that was much like a pencil with a wedge shaped end; think of a clay or play dough tool for details.

Eventually it grew and evolved into standard letters representing sounds.

It is curious that pictographs didn’t last longer in history, but even Asian calligraphy is melding into uniform letters, some would say at the cost of cultural integrity, but it leads to clearer messages and more global communication, as pictographic writing is still very fluid in it’s interpretation. Think of how many different stories you can dream up to go with a comic strip, then remember that was basically how the Egyptians wrote! Cool huh?

I would look on wikepedia for more info
