Why do we say there’s more than one way to skin a cat?

Why would you skin one in the first place?

None of the word and phrase origin books I have at home answer this one, so I researched it on the internet.

The answer seems to be that we don’t have a clue why we say that.

One explanation I kind of like (being a cat fan) is that “cat” really refers to “catfish”, which needs to be skinned to be fried. Unfortunately, the consensus seems to be that southern cat fans like me came up with that explanation relatively recently.

The one thing everyone agrees on is that the phrase means that all things can be done in different ways, and no one should insist that only one way works.

Being a great fan of house cats, I hope that the “cat” involved was something wild like a cougar or a tiger.

it’s some old expression that the olden people used blah blah blah, never ask an old person about phrases cuz they’ll go into a long rant about walking uphill both ways or something. and i would never skin a cat to prove a point. that saying is mention in uncle buck and he asks that question, so you should watch it if you haven’t.

I agree the phrase sounds awful but I have always been led to understand it means there are more ways to do something other than the one suggested at that time, usually if you really want something and can’t get it.

I don’t care much of why they skinned it, I just want to know what they plan on doing next and where my cat it is….”HERE KITTY KITTY!?!”

Because there is.

It’s hard to eat with the skin on.
