crossing one’s fingers is a sign of luck or indicates making a wish. It can be traced back to pre-Christian times, when the cross was a symbol of unity, with good spirits dwelling at the intersection point. When a wish was made on a cross, it held the wish at the intersection of the cross until the wish came true. This particular belief was popular among many early European cultures. It originally took two people. A friend or well-wisher placed his index finger over the index finger of the person making the wish, resulting in the forming of a cross. While one person made the wish, the other supported his friend. As time passed, the custom was simplified, so that a person could wish on his own, by crossing his index and middle fingers to form an X.
This ultimately evolved into the stock phrase, “Keep your fingers crossed,” with no actual finger-crossing at all.
