It’s supposed to be like a text message. Like the girl he has a one night stand with in the song texted “Thanks for the Memories” to him after that night. Only, she’d probably shorten it (as so many people who text do) so they wrote it as “Thnks Fr th Mmrs”.

It’s Pronounced Thanks for The Memories But Spelled Thnks Fr Th Mmrs. I’d Double Check Your CD – It Isn’t Genuine If It’s Spelled That Way.

Pete said they HAD to make it that way, because their record label, Island, was getting tired of all the long single names… like “A little less Sixteen Candles, A little More ‘Touch Me'”… so instead of calling it “Thanks for the Memories” they took the vowels out and called it “Thnks fr th Mmrs”. :]

I heard that the song is about a one night stand and there was a text message that was thanks for the memories but since its a text message it was Thnks Fr Mmrs. IDK i heard about it a while ago so it might be messed up.

i heard two things, but dont quite remember, like on text messaging its quicker to write w/o the vowels… and the other was that it wasnt worth the time to spell it all out… thats just wha i heard, somewhere… lol =P
