Why ‘a’ after ‘w’ in the word ‘water’ is read like ‘o’?

‘Water, wallet, walk, swan’ – why we say ‘o’ in the middle of these words? Please help me.

The vowel ‘a’ can be pronounced many different ways.

walk, water

car, jar

hall, fall

late, gate

cat, fat

fare, stare

wallet, swan

That’s just the way it is.

I don’t. I say them like ‘a,’ like the doctor’s office when he puts that thing on your tongue and looks into your throat. “aaa”
