why are dictionaries always red?

I was lying on my bed, looking at my bookshelf, when my eyes fell upon my dictionary. For some reason, a it occurred to me that dictionaries are always published with a red cover. Why is this?

not all dictionaries are red. throughout your dictionary collecting days you have acquired only red dictionaries, which leads you to surmise that all dictionaries are red.

an interesting problem in probability.

regardless of this, dictionaries come in all different colours. I have seen blue, green, red and orange dictionaries.

I have dictionaries in all the colors of the rainbow — and some in colors that AREN’T in the rainbow too–like an ancient old brown one. Hmmm, it’s so old that I’m not sure brown was the original color though.

There seems to be a greater than normal number of jerks on here tonight. Perhaps they should get some of their dictionaries out and look up a few words, like kindness, restraint, compassion, manners, etc. Sorry they chose to pick on you. 🙁

They’re not all red. I have a green and a blue dictionary, I do know that a lot of dictionary’s are red, they are mostly Websters I believe.

Presumably you’re thinking of the ones that are red rather than, say, blue (e.g. Collins).

They’re not. Webster’s is (sometimes), but American Heritage isn’t, OED isn’t, and many others aren’t.

They are, however, all READ.
