Answer depends on your take on the question as both are true and both are false. The direct question asked was which is true which both are (at one stage of a cycle – see below) however technically they are both true and false.

You could also say that you cannot determine if either is true or false in order to determine if either is true or false as they relate to nothing tangible (both “determine if either is true or false” should be in that sentence).

Trying to figure it out by cancelling out the possibilities – have to make some assumptions here.

ASSUME THE FIRST IS TRUE

If the 1st statement is correct (i.e. true) then the 2nd statement must also be proven correct.

So we’ll say that the 2nd statement (which claims the 1st is false) is correct then the 1st statement is false (as the 2nd claims it is) but to determine this we have already assumed that the 1st is true…

So continuing in this manner if the 1st is false then the 2nd is false.

If the 2nd is false then the 1st is true as it is false to say the first is false therefore it is true.

If the first is true then we are back to the start of our assumption and during our attempt to find the answer we have called both statements true and false.

Don’t forget if something is falsely false then it is true. Try not to get the words and the meaning mixed up; I did once or twice – e.g. it is false to say the second is false making the first true.

ASSUME 1st TRUE > then 2nd TRUE > if 2nd TRUE > then 1st FALSE > if 1st FALSE > then 2nd FALSE > if 2nd FALSE > then 1st TRUE > and back to the start.

now

ASSUME 1st FALSE > then 2nd FALSE > if 2nd FALSE > then 1st TRUE > if 1st TRUE > then 2nd TRUE > if 2nd TRUE > 1st is FALSE > and back to the start again.

now

ASSUME 2nd TRUE > then 1st is FALSE > if 1st FALSE > then 2nd FALSE > if 2nd FALSE > then 1st TRUE > if 1st TRUE > then 2nd FALSE > is 2nd FALSE > then 1st TRUE > and on and on

now

ASSUME 2nd FALSE > then 1st TRUE > if 1st TRUE > then 2nd TRUE > if 2nd TRUE > then 1st is FALSE > if 1st FALSE > then 2nd is FALSE > and back to start again.

I could be all wrong though.

Neither!

If the 1st one is true then the second one can’t state it’s lying.

If the 2nd one is true then the first one would be false too!

My brain hurts now!
