I think it’s a really old image… somewhere, in an 18th century children’s book is a famous image of a shepherd boy dozing off while his sheep escape over a fence. It was a popular book at the time, and I think the image turned rather quickly into a catchphrase.

Interestingly, I’ve found that doing something like that, imagining a scene in which something is happening repetitively, really does work to send you off to dreamland. However it can backfire, because sometimes when you start running an image over and over in your mind, it gets stuck in a groove and actually prevents you from sleeping, the same way a fragment of music playing over and over in your head can.

Here’s a method that’s worked for me. I imagine I’m standing by a misty highway, waiting for a ride. I try to peer through the mist, to see the oncoming vehicle, I try to imagine a yellow taxi coming through the mist, and stopping and the door opens, and I climb in and we drive off through the mist.

This has successfully knocked me out on many occasions.

It’s all in your mind, you know.

It is the repetition that is supposed to help, but doesn’t sometimes. I have always been a bit of an insomniac , so once I tried it, got really bored and started thinking about something else (the main cause of my insomnia). I have found that I am more likely to go to sleep propped up slightly in an inclined position as this creates more pressure on the point of my head that’s supposed to tell me “Hey, your lying down, time to go to sleep. Endorphins, release!”

counting is boring. boredom = sleep! the longer the count the easier to fall asleep.

The reference is to an idea of occupying your mind with a boring and repetitive task so that your mind can power down and let you get to sleep.
