I don’t think I’d use catalyst in that way.

I think I’d use the word:

inducement-

a positive motivational influence

act of bringing about a desired result

OR

incentive-

Serving to induce or motivat

OR

stimulus-

Something causing or regarded as causing a response.

catalyst

noun

1. (chemistry) a substance that initiates or accelerates a chemical reaction without itself being affected [ant: anticatalyst]

2. something that causes an important event to happen; “the invasion acted as a catalyst to unite the country”

Yes it makes sense, but it also makes an awkward sentence.There are other ways of saying what you meant. They, too, however, would be awkward. A part of the problem is that the word “catalyst”, though properly used as in your sentence, is a word which primarily is used in reference to some sort of chemical or mechanical reaction.
