Ms. doesn’t stand for Miss. Miss means a never-married woman, and it is sometimes used with a performer’s stage name even if she’s married. You never hear anyone introduced on a stage as “Mrs. Tina Turner”. Mrs. means a woman who is or was married. Ms doesn’t indicate either state so you can use it when you don’t know if a woman is married or not but don’t know her well enough to use her first name, or if you know it but wish to be more formal. If she wishes to be known as Miss or Mrs or Angie instead, she can tell you so.
