What’s so bad about “to be” verbs? Are there any exceptions?

Ok, what your teacher means is that you risk writing in an uninteresting way, if you stick to simple “He was in the shop. He was happy. His shirt was blue”, phrases. This is rather dull. If you avoid “to be”, you are forced to be a little more creative … “Wearing a blue shirt, the happy man waited patiently in the shop…”. This is obviously a bit more difficult, but the result is a lot better.
