What does this mean:”He dropped a lightning rod of Arab hostility”?
Would be grateful if anybody can help me explain the meaning of this sentence: “Not only did he drop a lightning rod of Arab hostility, but he also recruited a widely respected opposition leader.

Basically just saying he drew negative attention to himself from the Arab community. An easy example would be if I ran around with George Bush in Iraq; I’d basically be asking for trouble.
