In England the expression is “Leaking like a sieve”.
As earlier answerer’s have said a sieve is like a colander or a flour sifter.
If you were in a boat that was taking in water through the hull it would be “Leaking like a sieve”.

Sieve is something the people use in the kitchen. It is round and has a screen and you either shake it or it will have a small arm that you pull on the handle that pushes something like flour through the screen Gold miners or archaeologists use the same thing only on a bigger level than the kitchen. If you are “bleeding like a sieve” you are in trouble.

Sieve, perhaps? A sieve is used for straining liquids, like a collander. The water pours out the holes or porous material at the bottom, leaving any solid material behind. So, bleeding like a sieve would mean that the blood is pouring out in an uncontrolled way.

The spelling is “sieve”, a kitchen device consisting of a bowl-shaped wire screen in a frame with a handle for separating solid pieces from a liquid base (e.g. separating the veggies from the stock in a soup). If you’re “bleeding like a sieve”, it means you’re bleeding so profusely, it’s like the blood is pouring right through your skin like the soup in the above example pours right through the sieve.

A sieve is a kitchen item, also called a collander. It’s bowl-shaped, often metal, with lots of holes in it, often used to drain water off just-cooked spaghetti.
Bleeding like a sieve; if you poured blood into the sieve it would rain out of the holes.

It’s “sieve”. It’s like a collander, that you put food in to wash it off, and the water drains out of all the little holes.
