The helping verbs are: MAY, BE, DO, SHOULD, HAVE & WILL in their different forms.

They all help other verbs. eg.: MAY go, BE running, SHOULD work, HAVE held, WILL buy.

The main ones are be, do & have.

The previous answer is right in that adverbs help the verb, but

an ADVERB is not a helping VERB.

Helping verbs modify the action word of the sentence.

eg. Haylee walked painfully through the park.

*walked is the verb

*painfully is the adverb or helping verb!!!!

get it?

In junior high, we were required to memorize the helping verbs:

is, am, are, was, were, be, being, been, has, have, had, do, does, did, shall, will, should, would, may, might, must, can & could.

It’s been a while, but I think I listed them all.
