It is usually called an oar, but a small one could be a paddle, and a very large one is a sweep.

The shaft of an oar, between the handle and blade, is called the LOOM. Not many people know that.

An oar. Or, I think the term “pole” is sometimes used for those things they move gondolas along with, although I think it’s technically called a single sweep oar.

oar (paddle is a related object, but technically, you paddle a canoe with a paddle, you row a boat with an oar)
