Split – literal- you split something in half, cut it down the middle. Figurative- you are leaving where ever you are.

Take off- litteral- like an airplane takes off. FIgurative- you are leaving whereever you are.

Cut- Literal to actually cut something with scissors, knife, etc. Figurative- like cut class- to skip

Sweet- literal- sweet tasting, made from sugar. Figurative- awesome, a good deal

Sharp- literal- like a knife is sharp. Figurative- a sharp mind- really smart, picks up on things quickly

crush- to crush a can, mangle it, etc . Figurative- either the crush you have on someone or you feel crushed when someone insults you

Absorb- litterally like a sponge absorbs water. Figuratively, your mind absorbs information

Leak- an actual faucet leak- figuratively I can only think of “taking a leak”

First: Literal is the dictionary meaning and figurative is a slang or vernacular meaning. So the real meaning of split is to separate into 2 pieces but a figurative meaning might be to leave a place (I’m going to split from here because I have to be home by 10). So the literal meaning of leak would pertain to a pitcher with a hole in it but the figurative meaning would pertain to a secret that mysteriously gets out. The literal meaning of cut is something done with a pair of scissors and the figurative meaning would be when your friends cut you in public, or “dis” you. Hope this helps you understand the difference.

Sharp can also figuratively mean handsome, as in, “You look sharp!”

Take off can also mean “to remove.” “The teacher takes off points for spelling errors.”

Split is used in “split up,” meaning “to divide” or “to end a relationship.”

Leak is used figuratively in, “Someone leaked the story to the press.”

Storm is literally a weather condition. A snowstorm, a rainstorm. Storm is used figuratively in, “to storm the castle,” meaning “to invade.”

Good luck with your test!
